Racing History
Ray first competed in Bridgestone Porsche Series in 1988, entering and winning his
first round only three days after purchasing his Porsche 930 Turbo "The
Ivory Beast"
Ray won the overall Championship (and Class A) in 1990 and was rewarded
with a trip to England to compete in some Porsche races. This was an enjoyable
and successful trip and included winning the Inaugural Bill Taylor Memorial
Trophy Race, in Oulton Park, driving a 911 S.
Over the following years Ray continued to compete with his Ivory Turbo
- a car that was becoming handicapped by the weight it was required to
carry to comply with the Series power to weight ratio rules. It was not
unusual, during those years, to see 66 kilos of tractor weights bolted
to the passenger seat area floor!
In later years Ray purchased a second 930 Turbo - a silver 1982 car
known as the "Peace Car" (named after previous owner Brian Peace). By this
time Cup Cars were competing within the Series resulting in 930 Turbos
moving down a class to compete in Class B. Ray won the Class B Trophy in
1997 with the "Peace Car" and then won his second Bridgestone-Porsche overall
Championship in 1998.
In the 1999 and 2000 Series, Ray competed in "The Black" a 911 RSR spec
3.2 litre black Porsche. A very light and nimble car, it lapped tracks
in times not far behind those of the Ivory Beast. As part of the Super
Cup class, above Class A, and outside of any rules, "The Black" competed
against The Lighting Direct Team cars, Cup Cars on slicks and other cars
that did not comply with class rules. Ray is proud to have won the Bridgestone-Porsche
Super Cup Championship with The Black in the 2000-2001 Series.
